Brief Introduction to the Department of Electronic Engineering

I. The history and development of the department

In 1972, atmospheric sounding teaching and research section was established in Nanjing Institute of Meteorology.

In 1990, electronic technology teaching and research section was established in Nanjing Institute of Meteorology and renamed as electronic information teaching and research section at the beginning of 1998.

In 1998, Department of Electronic Information Science was set up on the basis of the above- mentioned two teaching and research sections.

In 2001, Electronic Engineering Department was established on the basis of atmospheric sounding teaching and research section, electronic information teaching and research section, lightning protection teaching and research section and electronic science and technology teaching and research section (under-construction then).

In 2003, electronic science and technology teaching and research section was set up. Electronic information teaching and research section was renamed as electronic information engineering teaching and research section.

In 2004, Nanjing Institute of Meteorology was changed into Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. The Ministry of Education authorized the establishment of the major of lightning protection science and technology.

In 2005, lightning protection teaching and research section was renamed as lightning protection science and technology teaching and research section.

II. Present situation of the department

The department has a strong team of faculty, which includes 13 professors, 12 associate professors, 17 lectures or engineers, 13 with doctor's degree and 24 master's degree and many visiting scholars as well as 10 professors and 1 academician from other institutions employed for the purpose of cooperative school-management and student-fostering. The department consists of 4 research and teaching sections, several laboratories and practical training bases. There are over 1633 undergraduate students in the department, of whom 523 major in electronic information-engineering, 492 in electronic science and technology, 294 in electronic information-engineering (lightning protection and electromagnetic compatibleness direction), 92 in lightning protection science and technology and 232 in atmospheric science (atmospheric sounding direction). As the cooperative teaching unit of WMO/RMTC, the department has taken charge of the teaching job of 9 sessions of international training programs on satellite meteorology, radar meteorology and meteorological instruments maintenance. And the following institutes are affiliated to the department: Jiangsu Province model post-graduate training base for ¡°global atmospheric environment remote sensing monitor instrument research and information processing¡±, (jointly established by production, education and research units), NUIST Signal and Information Processing Research Institute, NUIST lightning protection technology center, and NUIST Nanjing Phinix lightning protection scholarship review committee.

The department now has degree conferring institutions for the following majors: atmosphere remote sensing science and technology (both doctor's and master's degree), signal and information processing (master's degree, cooperating program with No. 724 Research Institute) and atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment (both doctor's and master's degree), with the last one being the nurturing object of National Major Academic Subject.

Atmospheric Science (atmospheric sounding direction)

This major aims at nurturing advanced special talents who have acquired the basic theory and skills in Atmospheric Science, possess good scientific quality and can handle the research, teaching, technology development and relevant management jobs in the field of atmospheric and other relative subjects. Through studying the basic theory and skills in Atmospheric Science and receiving training in scientific thinking and experimentation, the students will be able to adopt modern electronic technology and radar and satellite remote sensing technology in the basic and applied research in atmospheric science, acquire the basic skills of theoretical analysis, data process and computer application, and have strong knowledge updating ability and extensive scientific adaptation capability. The major courses provided include: simulated electron circuit, introduction to atmospheric science, atmospheric physics, modern atmospheric sounding, synoptic meteorology, atmospheric dynamics, radar technology, computer principles, computer language, radar meteorology, satellite meteorology, modern remote sensing technology and so on. After graduation, students can assume the job of research, technology, teaching or administrative management in enterprises or institutions involved in meteorology, civil aviation, maritime affairs, military affairs and science education. Students can also work for a master or doctoral degree in atmospheric remote sensing, atmospheric physics, atmospheric environment, atmospheric science or other fields of study.

Electronic information engineering

This major aims at cultivating advanced engineering talents who have acquired the basic theory and skills in electronic technology and information system, possess good scientific quality and can handle the research, designing, manufacturing and development of various kinds of electronic facilities and information system. The major courses include: circuit analysis principles, series courses for electron circuit, signal and system, system theories and encoding, electromagnetic field theory, C-language, computer theory, chip microprocessor and interface, computer controlling technology, digital image processing, digital signal processing, communication theory, engineering drafting, principles and application of programmable logic components, television sensor principles and application, lightning protection and so on. After graduation, students can assume the job of technology, teaching or administrative management in enterprises or institutions such as research institutions, schools, electronic and information sectors, and financial institutions. Students can also work for a master or doctoral degree in information signal communication engineering, electronic science and technology, engineering cybernetics and so on.

Lightning protection science and technology

This major aims at nurturing advanced engineering talents who have acquired the basic theory and skills in electronic technology information system and lightning protection , possess good scientific quality and can handle the research, designing, development and application of electronic facilities and information network systems and the development and application of lightning protection technology . The major courses provided include: circuit analysis principles, series courses for electron circuit, electromagnetic field theory, signal and system, programming, computer principles, computer network, lightning principles, principles of electromagnetic pulse protection , construction lightning protection and ground connection system, lightning protection engineering design, lightning monitoring and early-warning, lightning calamity risk evaluation, low voltage power distribution system, engineering drafting and CAD and so on. After graduation, students can assume the job of technology, teaching or administrative management in enterprises or institutions such as meteorological sectors, lightning protection center, scientific research institute, schools, electronic and information sectors and lightning protection companies. Students can also work for a master or doctoral degree in atmospheric remote sensing, atmospheric physics, atmospheric environment, information and communication engineering or other fields of study.

Electronic science and technology

This major aims at cultivating advanced engineering talents with profound theoretical basis, strong experimental ability and professional knowledge in the field of physics electronic, photoelectron and microelectronic, who have received basic training in scientific thinking and experimentation, possess good scientific quality and are capable of the designing and manufacturing of various electronic materials, components, integrated circuit and integrated electron system and photoelectron system and the research and development of new products, new technology and new workmanship. The major courses provided include: electron circuit, computer language, computer principles, electron components, signal process, sensor technology, photo-electric technology, display technology, laser technology and its application, optical fiber communication technology, microelectronics technology, electron design and practice and so on. After graduation, students can assume the job of technology, teaching or administrative management in research institutions, schools and enterprises or institutions engaged in electron and communication and instrument manufacture. They can also work for a master or doctoral degree in the field of information science and technology, information and communication engineering, testing measuring instruments, optics and so on.

Major scientific research direction:

•  Research on the microwave features of precipitation particle of complicated shape and phase state

•  Microwave atmospheric transmission and microwave remote sensing of clear-sky atmospheric and cloud precipitation

•  Research on the theory, signal processing methods and facilities of multi-parameter and Doppler radar sounding.

•  the processing and application of satellite remote sensing signal and information

•  photo-electric system and the processing of its signals

•  the testing and processing of signals of electronic instruments such as radar, laser and ultrasonic waves.

•  the processing of remote sensing digital image and atmospheric testing network data collection and processing

•  remote-sensing, forecast, evaluation and protection of lightning calamity

Major scientific research achievements:

11 textbooks and monographs are published. The department has won 7 rewards in teaching, curriculum construction and laboratory management, 11 rewards for advances of science and technology. It has also won 2 school-level rewards for advances of science and technology, passed 1 technical appraisal from China Meteorological Administration in recent five years. More than 100 articles on teaching and science research are published, including 4 on SCI source journals, 10 embodied in EI, 15 collected in ISTP international conference corpus, 68 on nucleus journals such as ¡°China Laser¡± ¡°photon journal¡± ¡°quantum electronics journal¡± ¡°atmospheric science¡±, and 8 other articles.
