Brief Introduction to the Department of Public Administration

Profile

The Department of Public Administration was evolved from the former Marxism-Leninism Teaching & Research Section and Sociology & Science Section. The department currently has 59 faculty members (58 are full-time), including 19 professors and associate professors. Many faculty members graduated from the prestigious universities and more than 66% of them have M.A. or Ph.D. degrees. The department currently offers 3 undergraduate programs (Administrative Management, Public Management and Human Resource Management) and has a full-time enrolment of 480 undergraduates.

The Department of Public Administration offers ideological courses for the students of the entire University and it also undertakes the specialized courses in its 3 bachelor programs. With a long period of persevering efforts, great progress has been made in the last few years. It has now built an outstanding faculty team and established an excellent Bachelor program. Moreover, its research endeavor has made mighty advances. During the period of ˇ°Eleventh Five-Year Planˇ±, the department has succeeded in establishing two M.A. programs (General Principles of Marxism & Ideological and Political Education) and it intends to apply for other 4 M.A. programs and another one or two Bachelor programs.

Undergraduate Programs:

Administrative Management

This undergraduate program aims at bringing up the research-oriented professionals and promoting the all-round development of its students. To secure their degrees, the students have to take many relevant courses; therefore they will have a solid academic foundation in administrative management. Furthermore, they will acquire a good command of certain practical sills. After graduation, students can work in governmental organizations, enterprises and institutions and social organizations etc. and t he graduates are well qualified for such work as administration management, personnel management and secretarial work.

The main courses in this programs are as follows: Principles of Management, Principles of Administration, Principle of Political Science, Contemporary Political System of China, Comparative Study of Political Systems, Introduction of Law, Sociology Conspectus, Governmental Economics, Administrative Organization, Local Government Studies, Municipal Administration, Public Policy, Management Psychology , Human Resources Development & Management, etc..

Graduation is conditional upon gaining enough credits and passing the thesis defense; to graduate with a Bachelor degree in Administration Management students must meet relevant requirements by the degree conferring board of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology.

Human Resource Management

This program focuses on the systematical study of the objective laws and particular scientific methods of human resource. Through four-year's study, students can have a better understanding about human resource and its management, including their position, influence, theoretical foundation, selection of systems and construction of legal system and their basic functions. Besides, adhering to the educational policy, this program attaches great importance to both the fundamental teaching of human resource and the improvement of students' abilities. In the education process, the programs and the curriculum are constantly optimized and updated. The scope of each program is being further expanded. The latest teaching approaches and management expertise are drawn on. Thus the graduates possess the knowledge of modern human resource management and have certain consciousness of marketing, law and advanced management.

Public Management

Graduates in this major have a good command of modern management theory, techniques and methods. They also possess certain practical abilities. Therefore, they are equipped with skills in management and policy analysis, so are mainly employed in government, cultural organizations and enterprises & institutions etc. According to the teaching policy of ˇ°rigorous requirements, stress on practice ", students are expected to become multidisciplinary with great creativity and practical ability. Thus detailed requirements are set as follow: to grasp the basic theory and knowledge of modern management, politics, law, and economics etc.; to have the quantitative analysis ability and computer skills to meet the demands of office automation and information system management; to be Familiar with our country's relevant laws, regulations, principles, and policies and system, to possess the basic qualities of the civil servant; to have capacities in social investigation and analysis of policies and to have good writing skills etc.. Generally speaking, the graduates may have the ability of preliminary scientific research and practical work. They can not only deal with the public institution management, but also be fit for the general management in different enterprises, public and intermediary organizations.
