General Introduction to
Department of Environmental Science and Engineering
The College of Environmental Science and Engineering developed on the basis of the original College of Environmental Science. Currently, it consists of four bachelor degree programs: environmental science, ecological science, environmental engineering and applied chemistry. Among them, environmental science and ecological science are our key and specialty programs. And t he College is known for its strong expertise and academic excellence in the field of atmospheric science, ecological environment and environmental pollution control. At present, there are 3 master degree programs and 1 doctor degree program in the department. There are research and education units, including the Research Center of environment conservation and the provincial teaching demonstration center of environmental science and engineering.
At present, there are more than 600 undergraduates and postgraduates in the college. And there are 40 teachers, including 5 professors and 8 assistant professors. Among these teachers there are young specialists of ¡°Special Achievements for Jiangsu Province¡±, candidates of Jiangsu 333 Project, candidates of National ¡°Bai-qian-wan¡± Talent Project, one key teacher supported by the Ministry of Education, academic chair persons of ¡°Qing Lan Project¡± in Jiangsu Province, excellent young scholars of ¡°Qing Lan¡± Project in Jiangsu Province, etc.. During recent years, the staff has undertaken many research projects, among which there are 5 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, more than 20 projects supported by provincial or ministerial institutions, and 15 projects supported by the university. Moreover, they have published more than 200 papers in different journals (almost 40 were published in SCI, EI, or ISTP journals), 4 textbooks (co-compiler), one monograph, and won 2 scientific and technological progress awards bestowed by provincial and ministerial institutions.
Through all kinds of activities, our students have practiced and enhanced their professional quality and capability. For example, they established the Environment Conservation Institute and organized a series of activities, which arouses wide attention of the media as well as the society. And they won a prize in Marshland Ambassador Program in 2004 as well as other 10 national and provincial awards.
Applied Chemistry £º We aim at cultivating students to grasp the general theory, elementary knowledge and experimental skills in chemistry, and develop the capability for applied research, technological development, scientific and technical management, and marketing. Then they could become professional personnel in chemical enterprises, scientific research institutes, and institutions of higher learning. And they are enabled to take up scientific research, technical development, technological design, management of production and operations, laboratory management and scientific and technical information in the field of applied electrochemistry, organic polymer materials, synthesis of fine chemicals, comprehensive utilization of waste gas, waste water and solid wastes by industrial enterprises. The main courses are: inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis , organic chemistry, chemicophysics, principles of chemical industry, applied electrochemistry, synthesis of fine chemicals, organic synthesis, chemical engineering, chemical engineering cartography, etc.
Ecological Science : We aim at cultivating students to grasp the general theory, elementary knowledge and basic skills in ecological science so that they are able to carry out research, teaching, management, and work like that in scientific and technical institutes, institutions of higher learning, enterprises as well as government departments. At the same time, students are equipped with the general theory and professional skills of modern ecology, and can adapt to sustainable development. The main courses are: ecology, biology, environment, geoscientific foundation, environmental eco-engineering, environmental humanities, environmental chemistry, computer programming, remote sensing technology and application, environment information system, simulation of ecological system, computer data management, computer networks, etc.
Environmental Engineering : We aim at cultivating students to become professional personnel with the basic knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, water pollution control, air pollution control, noise control, solid waste disposal and reutilization, environment quality monitoring, etc., and with the capability for the monitoring, manipulation and disposal of wastes, environment quality appraisement, environment programme and management, etc., so that they are able to take up environment programme, management, research and development, and appraisement in government departments, environment protection departments, scientific and technical institutes, or to become advanced engineers and technicians of environmental engineering who take up teaching in institutions of higher learning. The main courses are: inorganic and analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, chemicophysics, environment monitoring, environment science and technology, the control project of waste gas, waste water and solid wastes, environment quality appraisement, environment microbiology, etc..
Environmental Science : We aim at cultivating students to grasp the g eneral theory, elementary knowledge and basic skills in environmental science so as to enable them to take up teaching, research, environment management, etc. in scientific and technical institutes, institutions of higher learning, enterprises, government departments, etc.. The discipline mainly focuses on the study of the formation, development, regulation, control and reconstruction of the environmental system. The main courses are: advanced mathematics, general physics, general biology, environmental chemistry, ecology, environmental biology, environmental engineering, environmental management and regulations, environment quality appraisement, computer programming, remote sensing technology and application, environment information system, computer networks, etc.. Our graduates mainly take up environmental science, teaching, research, management, and work like that in departments of resources and environment, scientific and technical institutes, institutions of higher learning, enterprises as well as government departments.
