Department of Applied Meteorological Science
The forerunner of this department was Department of Agricultural Meteorology Science and it was founded by the famous agricultural meteorologist ! Mr.Feng Xiuzao in 1960. Master's degree was granted in 1981 and doctor's degree in 1998. Currently, the department covers the following bachelor's disciplines ! applied meteorology, atmospheric science in both natural and artificial directions, agricultural resources and environment and two doctorate branches ! atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment, applied meteorology. Atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment is the key discipline of China Meteorology Bureau and the first batch of specialty discipline. There are 588 undergraduate students and 150 students who are pursuing their master's or doctor's degree.
There are 36 teachers and among them, 12 are professors, 11 are associate professors and 17 of them ate tutors. The teachers who have doctor's degree and those who are pursuing doctorate studies account for 70%. There are many teachers who have been awarded special subsidy by the State Council or elected by National Project, 333 Project and Qinglan Project.
The department has for a long time been engaged in the teaching and research of agricultural meteorology, ecological environment meteorology, atmospheric environment and cloud-into-water physics and been awarded the first prize of national technological development twice, second prize and third prize once respectively and has got the award Norbert Gerbier MUMM from the World Meteorology Organization. Besides, the department has gained more than 30 awards in Jiangsu province.
More than 2,000 graduates and over 200 postgraduates have been churned out in the past 40 years. The employment rate for graduates has been over 98% and postgraduate matriculation rate around 40% in the recent 5 years.
The department is closely related to China Meteorology Association and is the designated unit to offer training on artificial meteorology technology and it assumes the responsibility of training for World Meteorology Organization.
